Scarborough Congress
Congratulations to Martyn Harris on being the joint winner of the Intermediate section at this weekend's Scarborough Congress with a score of 4.5/5. Modesty appears to have prevented him from mentioning it on the Newcastle website so I'll blow his trumpet for him here !! Click here to view the results.

League Structure Discussion Document
As you may be aware, a sub-committee has been formed with a view to looking at how we might improve the league. To this end David Hulme has produced a discussion document which we will be using as a basis for our deliberations. Please feel free to make your own comments on the document or come up with any ideas of your own. You can click here to view the document. Please email me with your thoughts or click on the Post header to leave a comment.

Disappointing Finish For Cheddleton In European Club Cup
Cheddleton won their 5th round match against SK TEAM VIKING by 4-2 to make it 3 wins in a row. Things went downhill after that though and they were beaten in both the 6th and 7th rounds to finish in 22nd position - 4 places below their ranking position. In the 6th round they came up against an all-GM team in BEER SHEVA of Israel and went down by 3.5 - 2.5. In the 7th and final round they were beaten 3.5 -2.5 by SC MPA-MARIA SAAL of Austria. Malcolm Armstrong played on board 6 in the match against BEER SHEVA and was outgraded by 400 points !!
Another Division 5 Draw
Cheddleton 'H' 2 Newcastle 'F' 2
Yet another draw in Division 5 at Cheddleton on Friday evening means that the Meir twins are the only teams to have registered a win so far this season.

European Club Cup
Cheddleton won their 3rd round match against Danish club BRONSHOJ SKAKFORENING by 4-2. They followed this up with another 4-2 win in the 4th round against EXPIK of Kosovo. Malcolm Armstrong did not play in the 3rd round but, unfortunately, lost his game in the 4th round. Cheddleton now have 5 points and sit 3 points behind the leaders, SIBERIA of Russia. They now face Swedish club SK TEAM VIKING in the 5th round.
Kidsgrove Off The Mark
Division 3
Kidsgrove got their first points of the season on the board last with a win at Alsager 'A'.

European Club Cup
Cheddleton are currently representing England in the European Club Cup in Skopje in Macedonia. Cheddleton are ranked 18th out of the 50 teams competing. Whilst the majority of the Cheddleton team play at a far loftier level than the North Staffs League we do have Malcolm Armstrong in the team. Malcolm is outperforming the team at the moment with a win and a draw from his first 2 games. The team drew 3-3 with the Austrian champions, SV RAIKA RAPID FEFFERNITZ, in the first round - and try saying that after you've had a couple of beers !! In the second round they were beaten 4-2 by Italian club WORLDTRADINGLAB CLUB 64 MODENA - another mouthful. They have been drawn against Danish club BRONSHOJ SKAKFORENING in the third round. Makes me very grateful that I only have to deal with names like Crewe and Alsager on the NSDCA website !! You can click here to follow the tournament.
Malcolm notes that while results have not gone well so far, morale remains high and there is a long way to go. I will be publishing Malcolm's first round win on the website later.

County Cups Last Minute Entries
Crewe have made last minute entries into Withnall Trophy and Jackson Cup. As a result of this the draws for these competitions have been revised and can be viewed on the County Cups website. This will be Crewe's first foray into the Staffs County Cup competitions so we wish them well.

Members Games
Can I take this opportunity to remind you all that I would like to publish some Members Games this season. So stop being bashful and forward your masterpieces (or master blunders) to me for publication on the site.
Staffs County Cups
Entries for this season's County Cups have been extremely disappointing with only 4 clubs entering teams - Walsall Kipping, Stafford, Cheddleton and Fenton. As a result of this there will only be preliminary rounds in the Withnall Trophy and the Hickman Cup and we then go straight to the finals of all 4 competitions. You can view the draw for each competition from the County Cups tab at the top of this page.
No Winners At Newcastle
There were two matches at the Bridge Club last night, both of them ending in draws.
