Alsager Win The South Cheshire Shield

Alsager became the first winners of the South Cheshire Shield when they beat Kidsgrove by 2 1/2 - 1 1/2 on Tuesday evening. This result gives them 6 points out of a possible 8 and with only one fixture remaining between Kidsgrove and Holmes Chapel they have an unassailable 4 point lead.

John Donaldson Memorial Trophy

Meir Chess Club hosted a rapidplay tournament last night in memory of one of their club stalwarts, John Donaldson, in aid of the Douglas MacMillan Hospice. The tournament was organised with teams of 2 playing each other in one game but with no conferring allowed between team mates. This usually led to each game having 4 seperate strategies going on !! The evening was a great deal of fun and was well supported by players from Newcastle, Holmes Chapel and Fenton as well as Meir. The 8 pairings of the 16 players were drawn on the night and the tournament was run on a knock-out basis. After each round the losing team were put into another draw against the other losing teams. The end result of all this was a win in the Final for Ian Jamieson of Newcastle and Bob Perry of Meir over Geoff Yates of Fenton and Paul Clapham of Newcastle. So a good night all round for Newcastle, capped off by Martyn Harris taking the Wooden Spoon with his partner Abby Sergeant of Meir !!
The evening raised a total of £80 for the Douglas MacMillan Hospice so well done to Meir for organising such a brilliant event and many thanks to all those who took part or just spectated and donated to such a worthy cause.
