British Championship Reaching Its Climax

The British Championship is reaching it's climax with Grandmaster Michael Adams leading the way on 7.5/9, half a point clear of fellow Grandmaster Nigel Short on 7/9, with 2 rounds remaining.

Elsewhere, our own David Anderton, the President of the Staffordshire Chess Association, leads the way in the Senior Championship with an impressive score of 4.5/5 with 2 rounds remaining.

As many of you may already know, Craig Whitfield of Cheddleton won the U16 Championship last week with a score of 6/7.

In the Major Open, Bill Armstrong of Cheddleton is just below halfway with a score of 4/9 with 2 rounds remaining.

Jon and Sandra Blackburn of Holmes Chapel are both competing in the U160 Championship and have both scored 1.5/3 at the time of writing this and are exactly halfway up the table.

Jacob Boswell of Cheddleton is competing in both the U9 and U10 Championships. The U9 was played over one day last week and Jacob scored an excellent 4/7 to finish 16th out of 49 players, so right up in the top 1/3rd of the list. In the U10 Championship he has scored 2/4 at the time of writing this and is halfway up the table with 2 rounds remaining.

My apologies if there are any other North Staffs players taking part that I have not mentioned.

On a lighter note, Roger Edwards of Cheddleton, the Chief Arbiter at the Championships and also of recent Channel 4 Countdown fame, tells me that there was a quiz at the end of last week which was won by a team calling themselves St Edwards. The St Edwards team comprised of Roger, his wife, Bill Armstrong and CJ de Mooi, ECF President and Egghead stalwart - hardly a fair fight !!!!
